Can You Really Clean a Soot-Covered Sheepskin Rug? Yes. And We Did.
Not every rug we see at Hoffman Carpet Cleaning is a standard area rug. Some are family heirlooms. Others are rare hides, delicate silks, or custom-made pieces. And every so often, we get something a little out of the ordinary, like a natural sheepskin rug covered in dark soot from a wood-burning stove.
When this particular rug came into our Albany facility, it was nearly blackened from the soot. The soft wool fibers were matted down, and the distinct texture that gives sheepskin its luxurious feel was buried under a layer of grime. But with the right tools, experience, and a lot of care, we brought it back to life.
We gently removed the soot using safe, wool-specific methods that preserved the hide while lifting the deeply embedded soils. The result was a clean, refreshed rug that looked and felt like sheepskin should: soft, fluffy, and naturally beautiful.
This kind of job is not a one-size-fits-all process. Hides and specialty rugs require careful handling, specialized knowledge, and an understanding of how different materials respond to moisture, agitation, and pH. That attention to detail is part of what sets us apart at Hoffman. When someone asks, “Can you even clean something like this?” our answer is almost always yes. And we’ve got the track record to prove it.
